The Benefits of Reduced Pest Pressures
Overall, southwestern Ontario has fewer species of insect and disease pests than American seed corn
production regions, according to Albert Tenuta, Field Crop Pest Specialist with the Ontario Ministry Agriculture and Food. In addition, the level of pressure from pests that do occur in Ontario is
lower than pressures for these pests in competitive areas.
Reduced pest pressures result in higher, more consistent yields and lower production costs associated
with reduced pesticide use.
